Six First Year UQ St Leo’s College residents have volunteered to spend a month of their Christmas holidays serving the poor in India. Will Coorey, Paddy Dowling, Lawson Enright, Ty Flamsteed, Tom McKay and Andrew White have paid their deposits for the journey of a lifetime. They have signed on for Leo’s month-long Centenary service trip to India, where they will spend time volunteering with Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata, as well as working with disabled children from the slums of Chennai at the Mithra Rehabilitation Centre. They will also spend a week exploring ancient cities and monuments, and learning about the rich history and culture of Hindustan.
This will be St Leo’s seventh India Immersion trip. It is offered to all residents of the College as a way of learning more about the world, especially a world where the disparity between rich and poor is one of the most critical issues of our time. The trip offers students an opportunity to be of service to their neighbour, and an opportunity to better understand Einstein’s wisdom: “Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.”
